LONDON: According to The Times, senior Muslim and Jewish leaders in Britain signed a historic reconciliation agreement during a covert meeting that was delivered to King Charles III. Eleven religious leaders participated in the summit, which was held last month in Scotland’s 17th-century Drumlanrig Castle. On Tuesday, the king was shown the resulting agreement, which was named the Drumlanrig Accord.
The “least he could do” was to host the religious leaders, he said, praising the “marvellous exercise.” At the duke of Buccleuch’s invitation, the conference sought to mend fences between the Muslim and Jewish communities in the United Kingdom following the conflict in Gaza. The group of religious leaders stated that they were honoured to be able to show a copy of the agreement to His Majesty the King at Buckingham Palace, highlighting its significant social and national impact.
The agreement outlined “a new framework for engagement … built on mutual respect, dialogue, and practical collaboration” between Jews and Muslims in Britain. It draws attention to the two religions’ common spiritual roots. Collaboration on “practical initiatives that support the most vulnerable” was pledged by both groups. The agreement is expected to result in the creation of a joint group that will be able to keep an eye on antisemitic and Islamophobic acts in Britain, according to observers.
