Trade Obstacles are Announced by Israel and Turkey as Strained Tensions over Gaza Continue.

ANKARA, Turkey: As relations continued to worsen amid the Gaza conflict, Turkey and Israel slapped trade restrictions on each other on Tuesday.
Turkiye, a fervent opponent of Israel’s military operations in the region, declared that it would immediately impose restrictions on the shipment of 54 different kinds of goods to Israel. These include steel, aluminum, jet fuel, building supplies, and chemical fertilizers. Israel retorted that it was getting ready to outlaw goods made in Turkiye.
The statements were made the day after Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan claimed that Israel had forbidden Turkish military cargo planes from participating in an effort to airdrop aid to Gaza and threatened to retaliate by taking several measures against Israel until it declared a ceasefire and permitted aid to enter Gaza without hindrance.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government, which suffered major setbacks in local elections last month, is faced with intense pressure at home to halt trade with Israel. Critics accuse the government of engaging in double standards by leveling strong accusations against Israel while continuing lucrative commercial relations.
