In Addition to 18 Other People, Biden Gives the Jan. 6 Committee Leaders the Second-Highest Civilian Honor

WASHINGTON: Liz Cheney and Bennie Thompson, the heads of the congressional investigation into the Capitol riot, received the second-highest civilian honor from President Joe Biden on Thursday. Donald Trump has called for their involvement in the investigation to result in their imprisonment.

In a ceremony in the East Room, Biden presented the Presidential Citizens Medal to 20 individuals, including two of the president’s lifelong friends, former Sens. Chris Dodd, D-Connecticut, and Ted Kaufman, D-Delaware; Americans who battled for marriage equality; and a pioneer in the treatment of wounded troops.

You represent the fundamental truth together: “We are a great country because we are good people,” he remarked. The responsibilities of citizenship are where our democracy starts and finishes. That is what you all represent; it is our job for the ages.

Last year, Biden paid tribute to those who helped protect the will of American voters during the 2020 presidential election, when Trump attempted and failed to overturn the results, or who helped defend the Capitol from a horde of irate Trump fans on January 6, 2021.
