In a Jeddah Lecture, a French Scholar Examines Decoration as a Means of Bridging Cultural Divides

Jeddah: The head of the French Institute of Islamology, Pierre Caye, recently spoke at Hayy Jameel in Jeddah on the topic of “Ornament at the Service of Cultural Dialogue.”In partnership with the French Consulate General and the French Research Centre of the Arabian Peninsula in Jeddah, the Alliance Francaise Saudi Arabia arranged the presentation. In his presentation, Caye examined how ornamental art, both Eastern and Western, can unite people from different social and cultural backgrounds.

“We see a natural revival, one in which modern art connects with the past, through ornamental art, which circulates quickly, fluidly, and in a very present manner,” Caye told Arab News. The procedure is quite fascinating and stimulating.

“Art in the form of ornamentation is universal. It has existed in all cultures, East and West, since the beginning of time. Music, architecture, calligraphy, rhetoric, ornamental arts, and even religious and sacred arts are all examples of ornamentation, he added. In actuality, decoration is a part of all artistic endeavors. It is a preferred method of intercultural communication.

Caye also expressed his appreciation for the ancient charm of Jeddah. “The renovation of Al-Balad astounded me. It served as the ideal prelude to my talk and a starting point for me to discuss my experience with wooden ornaments and the elaborate timber craftsmanship found in Roshan windows,” he said.
