Condolences from Saudi Leaders After Sudan’s Landslide Tragedy

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman offered condolences on Wednesday to the people of Sudan after a devastating landslide in Darfur killed more than 1,000 people.

The disaster struck the village of Tarasin in the Jebel Marra mountains on Sunday following days of heavy rainfall, according to the armed group controlling the area. Sudanese authorities, the UN, and aid organizations have since rushed to deliver humanitarian support to survivors.

In separate messages to Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council President Gen. Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, the king and crown prince expressed their deepest sympathies to the families of the victims and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

The Sudan Liberation Movement/Army, which oversees parts of Jebel Marra, appealed for urgent international assistance to help recover the bodies of those killed, including men, women, and children. Luca Renda, the UN’s Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, said Tuesday that the UN and its partners are mobilizing to support the affected population and deliver emergency aid.
