The United Nations High Court’s decision that Israel’s settlement strategy on Palestinian territory violates international law has been hailed by Saudi Arabia.
In a statement, the Saudi foreign ministry said that the Kingdom accepted the International Court of Justice’s advisory opinion and urged action to find a fair resolution to the Palestinian issue.
The verdict, which is not legally enforceable, was released by the World Court on Friday.
The Muslim World League, situated in Saudi Arabia, issued a statement characterizing the ICJ’s decision as “a positive step towards the human and legal right of the Palestinian people to reach a just and comprehensive solution to their cause.”
The decision, while non-binding, guarantees that Palestinians “obtain their legitimate rights to self-determination and establishing their independent state in accordance with the Arab Peace Initiative and relevant international legitimacy resolutions,” according to MWL Secretary-General Mohammed bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa, who is also chairman of the Association of Muslim Scholars.
Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention is violated, the court panel concluded, by Israel’s movement of settlers to the West Bank and Jerusalem as well as by Israel’s continued presence there.
