At a Time of War, Zelensky and Indian Prime Minister Modi meet in Kiev

Weeks after the Ukrainian leader chastised the Indian prime minister for his visit to Moscow, President Volodymyr Zelensky and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met on Friday in war-torn Kiev.

Modi sees the visit as an opportunity to set the record straight following his public embrace of Russian President Vladimir Putin during negotiations in July, when Moscow mounted a huge missile strike on Ukraine that resulted in damage to a children’s hospital.

Zelensky greeted Indian Prime Minister Modi with a frown as he embraced him at the Marinskiy presidential residence in Kyiv, and they then started negotiations. In a post written in Ukrainian, Modi expressed his sympathies for the hit on X once more.

Conflict can be especially harmful to young children. “My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the children who have passed away, and I hope they find the fortitude to bear their loss,” the post read.

The visit holds significance for Kyiv, which receives support from the West and has been attempting to cultivate diplomatic ties with the Global South in order to obtain a just settlement to terminate its conflict with Russia.
