A Former Diplomat Who Was Dissident was Shot Dead in Southern Syria: Observe

On Tuesday evening, armed men stormed into Noureddine Al-Labbad’s house in the town of Al-Sanamayn and started shooting at him and his brother. Labbad had returned to Syria two weeks prior from France, according to the British monitor. BEIRUT: According to a war monitor on Wednesday, a former diplomat from the Syrian Arab Republic who had fled from his job under the regime of ousted President Bashar Assad was shot dead in the south of the nation with his brother.

In the village of Al-Sanamayn, about 50 kilometers (30 miles) south of Damascus, armed men broke into the house of former diplomat Noureddine Al-Labbad Tuesday night. They fired on him and his brother before escaping, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. After working as a diplomat under Assad in France, where he represented the opposition’s Syrian National Coalition, Labbad had returned to Syria two weeks prior, according to the Britain-based monitor.

In 2013, he had resigned from the Foreign Ministry. Following the incident, grenades were detonated and cars were set on fire, prompting security authorities to establish a curfew in the town, according to an AFP correspondent. However, it had been lifted by dawn, and traffic was slowly starting up again. Syrian security forces posted videos of gunmen entering what was allegedly Labbad’s house on Telegram.
