Waleed El-Khereiji, Saudi Arabia’s deputy foreign minister, was present at President Luis Rodolfo Abinader’s inauguration ceremony. Abinader was re-elected in May to continue his leadership of the Dominican Republic.
El-Khereiji participated in the ceremony on Friday in Santo Domingo, the capital, on behalf of King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. He expressed to the president and the Dominican people the best wishes of the Saudi leaders.
There were also other regional luminaries there, such as the presidents of Uruguay, Paraguay, and Panama.
The former businessman Abinader won 58% of the vote in May to win a second four-year term on a pro-business platform and a crusade against corruption. The 57-year-old made a series of social reforms and a pledge of economic progress in a speech to patrons of the National Theater.
El-Khereiji also went to a reception where he was introduced to other Dominican authorities and the president.
The Dominican Republic and Saudi Arabia established diplomatic relations in 2012, and the island nation backed Saudi Arabia’s successful bid to host Expo 2030 in its capital, Riyadh, last year.
