Amid a Regional Crisis, Saudi Arabia Allows More Than 1,300 Planes Each Day to Use its Airspace

RIYADH — As tensions in the area escalate, Saudi Arabia has opened its airspace to facilitate the smooth operation of flight routes and air traffic, deploying all available human and material resources to handle an increase in transit flights. In recent days, Saudi airspace has witnessed an average of around 1,330 aircraft per day, which is almost twice as many flights as there were prior to the regional crisis.

Supported by state-of-the-art technology and strict security measures, these extra flights were operated securely and effectively in complete compliance with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) regulations. The General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) acted proactively at this peak time by opening additional airways to handle the surge in traffic. By using cutting-edge navigational technology, the Kingdom increased the amount of airspace it could use and improved flying routes, which improved operational effectiveness and safety.

Since the crisis began, more than 220 airlines have flown via Saudi Arabia, causing strategic backup measures to be activated. These included stringent airspace and airport security protocols backed by advanced infrastructure and monitoring technologies. Teams managed the situation in real time by utilising sophisticated data processing technologies to enable smooth coordination and communication amongst operators at the local and regional levels. As a result, Saudi Arabia was able to continue continuous flying operations at the highest safety levels while reacting quickly to changing situations.
