An Awareness-Raising Event Encourages Early Breast Cancer Screening

JEDDAH: A gathering was organised in Jeddah to emphasise the importance of early breast cancer detection. Early detection of the disease is crucial to preserving lives, according to Dr. Mayada Mohammad Samkari, a family medicine expert and supporter of the breast cancer screening pathway at the Second Jeddah Health Cluster. My main takeaway from speaking at this event is that life can be saved by early identification and awareness of breast cancer. Although breast cancer is the most frequent cancer in women, the survival rate is much greater when detected early (around 90% for localised instances), she noted.

Samkari also noted improvements in breast cancer screening and emphasised the need of women taking the initiative to advocate for their health. During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Hotel Galleria Jeddah, Curio Collection by Hilton, sponsored the event. Between 100 to 150 people attended, including volunteers, industry experts, and healthcare professionals. The Ministry of Health, the Blood Bank Centre, the Jeddah Second Health Cluster, King Abdul Aziz University, King Saud University, and the Tuwaiq Volunteers Group were among the organisations that collaborated on the sessions.

Participants had the chance to interact with professionals and take part in talks about issues like early detection, preventive care, and doable actions that could be made to protect health. There was also a blood drive at the event.
