Disparities Between the US and Europe Are Highlighted at the Munich Conference

MUNICH: During the opening session of the Munich Security Conference on Friday, world leaders and political and security experts were able to observe the fault lines between Europe and the US over Ukraine, the international order, and the transatlantic relationship. When US Vice President J.D. Vance began his much-anticipated speech, I was in the room to witness the look of disbelief on people’s faces. Dozens of others stood on balconies and stairwells to hear Vance live because there was no seats available in the crowded area. He shocked them, and he did not let them down. He joked, “I hope this is not the only applause I get,” after being greeted with cheers.

The American vice president’s speech at the most important international security conference did not mention Ukraine at all, nor did it address any security or foreign policy issues. This was more shocking than his lectures on democracy, particularly free speech, and his attacks on immigration. There’s a new sheriff in town, he just warned the Europeans. The Europeans were present to receive the message, and they did so at their pre-conference discussions with Vance.
