CAIRO: According to a top Hamas official, the Palestinian organization is willing to free all Israeli hostages in return for a “serious prisoner swap” and assurances that Israel will put an end to the conflict in Gaza. Egypt and Qatar, two countries collaborating with the United States to mediate a truce in the besieged region, are negotiating with Hamas in Cairo.
According to Taher Al-Nunu, a senior Hamas official, “We are prepared to free all Israeli prisoners in exchange for a serious prisoner swap agreement, an end to the war, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip, and the entry of humanitarian aid.” But he said that Israel was impeding efforts to reach a truce. Nunu stated that the occupation is breaking its promises, preventing the ceasefire agreement from being implemented, and extending the conflict, not the quantity of prisoners.
He continued by saying, “Hamas has thus emphasized the necessity of guarantees to compel the occupation (Israel) to uphold the agreement.” On Monday, the Israeli news outlet Ynet said that Hamas had received a fresh proposal. In exchange for US assurances that Israel would engage in talks for a second phase of the truce, the organization would free ten live prisoners.
The ceasefire’s initial phase, which started on January 19 and featured many hostage-prisoner exchanges, lasted for two months before breaking down.
