In Images: A First Look at the Major Metro Stations in Riyadh

With the promise of reducing traffic in the Saudi capital, the Riyadh Metro opened to much fanfare on Sunday. Some of its stations, which were created by some of the most known firms in the world, are nothing short of architectural wonders. Four of the stations on the blue line, which opened this week, are among the five most important stations that Arab News examined. The famous Zaha Hadid Architects created the 42,000 square meter KAFD Station, which is arguably the most famous of them.

Connecting the blue, yellow, and purple lines, the station is a crucial junction for travelers heading south into the city center and the endpoint for tourists heading from Riyadh’s airport to the financial sector. The STC Station, which links the red and blue lines, is centrally placed and was created by Gerber Architekten of Germany. With four levels that stretch 30 meters below the ground and an open plaza space, the station was inspired by the natural limestone formations in the Tuwaiq mountains that surround the city.

The Qasr Al-Hokm Station, which joins the orange and blue lines, has an outdoor plaza and a unique stainless-steel roof. The Norwegian company Snohetta created the design. The blue and green lines in the Al-Batha area of Riyadh are connected by the 19,400 square meter National Museum Station.
