According to authorities, a boat overturned in the northwest Nigerian state of Sokoto, leaving over 40 persons missing. Rescuers are currently looking for them.
Following the “tragic boat mishap,” Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said on Sunday that a reaction team had been sent out by its Sokoto operations office to aid with rescue attempts.
In a statement posted on social media, NEMA said that around 40 further passengers were still unaccounted for and that roughly 10 people had been rescued.
According to a local official quoted by Nigeria’s The Punch daily, overloading—a common problem for boats in the state’s riverine communities may have been the cause of the disaster. In Nigeria, boat accidents are frequent, especially when rivers and lakes overflow during the yearly rainy season, which runs from March to October.
In August 2024, a wooden boat bringing farmers to their rice fields across a river capsized in Sokoto State, resulting in the deaths of at least 16 farmers. A boat carrying over 100 people capsized in Niger State, in north-central Nigeria, last month, leaving at least 13 dead and dozens more missing.
