Major Palestinian political factions, including Hamas, announced on Friday that they have agreed to form an independent committee of technocrats to govern Gaza after the war.
In a joint statement released on the Hamas website following a meeting in Cairo, the factions said they would hand over the administration of Gaza to “a temporary Palestinian committee composed of independent technocrats.” The body will oversee essential services and daily affairs in coordination with Arab nations and international organizations.
The factions also vowed to unite their stance on key national issues and called for a broader meeting to develop a national strategy. They emphasized the need to revive the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) as the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people.
Although Hamas remains outside the PLO, which its rival Fatah dominates, both groups have recently resumed dialogue. A source told AFP that Hamas and Fatah delegations met in Cairo this week to discuss the next phase of the US-backed Gaza ceasefire plan. The talks reportedly ended with an agreement to continue meetings and strengthen internal unity against Israeli policies.
During the discussions, Egypt’s intelligence chief, Hassan Rashad, also met senior representatives from several Palestinian factions, including Islamic Jihad, the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.
