Manila: On Monday, the Philippines and the EU agreed to launch a security and defence dialogue to combat cyberattacks and foreign influence. Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo made the statement during a visit to Manila by the EU’s foreign policy leader, Kaja Kallas.
“Our decision to initiate a security and defence discussion marks another key milestone in our partnership. This dialogue will provide a mechanism for the Philippines and the European Union to discuss security and defence-related issues with both depth and regularity,” Manalo said during a joint press conference with Kallas.
We believe that via the security and defence conversation, we can stay proactive and unified in dealing with rising security risks and problems that cross borders, such as cyberattacks, foreign meddling, and information manipulation.
Kallas stated that the meeting will cover “current geopolitical challenges and will foster exchanges and cooperation in security and defence areas, including maritime security.”
The Philippines strengthened its defence connections with major EU allies over the weekend at the 22nd Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, where Defence Secretary Gilberto Teodoro held bilateral meetings with his French, Swedish, and Lithuanian colleagues.
