Saudi Arabia is at the Forefront of Global AI Governance

Riyadh: Saudi Arabia has offered a trailblazing paradigm for bolstering comprehensive artificial intelligence governance at the regional and international levels, according to Abdullah Al-Ghamdi, president of the Saudi Data and AI Authority. He pointed out that as AI continues to influence economies, cultures, and global power structures—crossing national boundaries and affecting companies, governments, labour markets, and security—there is an increasing need for this kind of governance on a global scale.

According to the Saudi Press Agency, he made these comments while speaking at a session on Monday that was a part of the AI Action Summit, which was hosted in Paris from February 10–11. Along with a number of other foreign leaders, decision-makers, and top AI specialists, the meeting was attended by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and French President Emmanuel Macron.

Comprehensive AI governance, according to Al-Ghamdi, guarantees that all parties involved—including governments, corporations, civil society, and marginalised communities—have a say in how AI develops in the future. According to the SPA, he pointed out that thorough governance can reduce risks, increase cooperation and openness, and create a framework that guarantees AI benefits all of humanity rather than just a select few.

Al-Ghamdi continued by saying that AI runs the risk of escalating inequality, bolstering prejudices, and favouring only particular groups if various viewpoints are not included in governance.  He pointed out that, after the US and the UK, Saudi Arabia ranks third with 65 AI-related policies listed on the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s AI Policy Observatory.
