Saudi Arabia Presents the Riyadh Action Agenda to tackle Drought and land Restoration

RIYADH: In an effort to bring partners together to address drought, desertification, and land degradation, Saudi Arabia unveiled the Riyadh Action Agenda.

During a keynote lecture at a high-level conversation on sustainable agri-food systems, Osama Faqeeha, advisor to the UNCCD COP16 presidency and deputy minister for the environment at the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture, made the announcement.

For the two-year presidency, the agenda will build on the momentum of COP16, including a wide range of stakeholders to provide real results for farmers, indigenous peoples, and other impacted populations.

“It is crucial that we continue to mobilize and incentivize action long after COP16 in Riyadh ends, reaffirming Saudi Arabia’s leadership in land restoration and leaving a lasting legacy of global change,” Faqeeha stated in a keynote address if we are to accelerate land restoration and drought resilience initiatives at the pace and scale required.

The debut was on Agri-Food System Day, one of COP16’s seven themed days. According to the UNCCD, agriculture is the primary cause of land degradation, contributing to 70% of freshwater usage, 80% of deforestation, and 23% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
