According to national broadcaster SVT, which cited unnamed sources, Sweden’s security agency has arrested a Swedish ambassador on suspicion of spying. Following an operation in the Stockholm region recently, the security agency (SAPO) reported that it had arrested an individual on suspicion of espionage. Still, it would not provide any other details. SAPO spokesman Karin Lutz told Reuters that “it is accurate that we have a case where the suspicion is spying. “One individual has been placed under arrest.
According to SVT, the suspect had been sent to several embassies worldwide, and SAPO was investigating any possible links between the suspect and the government’s national security adviser’s departure last week.
Due to confidentiality concerns, we are unable to comment at this time since the investigation is still in its early stages,” the representative stated. A day after being appointed national security advisor, Tobias Thyberg, a foreign service veteran who had previously served as ambassador to Afghanistan and Ukraine, resigned.
According to SVT, Thyberg is not a suspect in any crimes. After resigning in January, Thyberg’s predecessor was accused of handling sensitive material carelessly. The lawyer assigned to represent the individual in jail, Anton Strand, informed the tabloid Aftonbladet that his client had filed a criminal complaint against the police for the arrest and denied any wrongdoing. Reuters contacted him by phone and email, but he did not immediately reply.
