After Gaza registered its first incidence of polio in 25 years, a health official announced on Saturday that a vaccination campaign against the disease had started there.
Director of basic health care at the Gaza Health Ministry Moussa Abed told AFP that local health officials, the UN, and non-governmental organizations “are starting today the polio vaccination campaign in the central region.”
Although officials had originally stated that the campaign was anticipated to begin on Sunday, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Thursday that Israel had consented to a series of three-day “humanitarian pauses” in Gaza to permit vaccinations.
The vaccination campaign is scheduled to start in central Gaza, move to southern Gaza, and finally end in northern Gaza.
The two-dose campaign intends to reach over 640,000 youngsters under the age of ten.
This week, the UN Security Council was informed by Michael Ryan, the deputy director-general of WHO, that 1.26 million oral vaccination doses had been distributed to Gaza, with an additional 400,000 still to come.
Earlier this month, the Palestinian Health Ministry, situated in Ramallah, said that an unvaccinated 10-month-old baby from central Gaza had tested positive for polio in Jordan.
