By establishing a centralized command, NATO will assume a more active role in helping the US organize training and arms transfers to Ukraine.
The purpose of the action is to protect supplies going to Ukraine against Donald Trump’s possible presidential comeback in November.
The move will result in the stationing of hundreds of personnel from various NATO countries at a base in Germany as well as important hubs along the alliance’s eastern flank.
The change is rather minor, and it appears that a US General with three stars will likely assume command.
NATO members have promised to continue providing Ukraine with at least 40 billion euros ($43 billion) in support, a level of support that has not changed since Russia’s invasion.
“Through proportional contributions, allies intend to provide a minimum baseline funding of 40 billion euros within the next year, and to provide sustainable levels of security assistance for Ukraine to prevail,” the declaration from the conference stated.
While the political pledge is intended to provide aid a stronger foundation, it is not legally enforceable and may be disregarded by succeeding administrations.
Stoltenberg had initially wanted to convince allies to commit for a number of years, but the US insisted on a review the next year.
