RIYADH: On February 13, Saudi Arabia’s national broadcaster commemorated World Radio Day, highlighting the influence of radio throughout the Kingdom’s history. This year’s World Radio Day, which was designated by UNESCO to commemorate the anniversary of the first UN radio broadcast in 1946, had as its theme “Radio and Climate Change.
The CEO of the Saudi Broadcasting Authority, Mohammed bin Fahd Al-Harthi, discussed the authority’s dedication to radio development with the Saudi Press Agency, pointing to its extensive reach. According to Al-Harthi, Saudi radio also provided various content, fuelling ongoing advancement and transformation.
He clarified that Saudi radio’s expansion paralleled the Kingdom’s societal progress, acting as an essential medium for information sharing and informing the populace of regional and worldwide events. According to the Saudi Press Agency, the event honours broadcast professionals’ efforts to disseminate information while fostering social discourse and emphasises radio’s ongoing significance in public communication.
Radio is still one of the most popular worldwide media platforms, reaching a wide range of populations in all spheres of life despite technological advancements. Statista Market Insights estimates that 3.1 billion people listened to radio in 2024. King Abdulaziz approved the Kingdom’s initial broadcasts from Jeddah during the Hajj season in 1949, marking the beginning of Saudi radio’s history.
