RIYADH: The first totally robotic heart transplant in history was carried out by Saudi surgeon Dr. Feras Khaliel of King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre, who received recognition for his accomplishment in Riyadh.
Khaliel, director of the Robotics and Minimally Invasive Surgery Program and head of cardiac surgery, accepted the Health Research Excellence: Applied Innovation Award from the Research, Development and Innovation Authority on Tuesday at the Global Health Exhibition in Riyadh.
This accomplishment honours the hospital’s growing robotic heart surgery program, which since its launch in 2019 has performed more than 400 procedures. Khaliel’s award highlights his contributions to the advancement of innovation and research, especially in the field of robotic heart surgery.
A significant development in heart transplant surgery was made when the transplant was done on a 16-year-old patient who had end-stage heart failure. This minimally invasive technique marks the beginning of a new era in heart surgery by lowering discomfort, recovery time, and the risk of complications. This approach balances bold innovation with stringent safety protocols, ensuring superior outcomes that enhance patient well-being,” Al-Fayyadh added.
