BEIRUT: Ahead of a summit to gather support for Lebanon on Thursday in Paris, Lebanon’s minister in charge of reacting to the crisis warned Tuesday that the country will require $250 million each month to aid over a million people affected by Israeli attacks. About 1.3 million people were uprooted from their houses. They were taking refuge in public facilities or with family members. Still, Nasser Yassin told Reuters that the government’s reaction, aided by local initiatives and international aid, barely met 20% of their requirements.
Yassin now spends much of his time at government headquarters with a crisis team that includes other Lebanese ministries, the UNDP, and the Lebanese Red Cross. Prior to the current conflict starting a year ago, his official mandate as environment minister meant that he was working on preventing forest fires.
Yassin believes the growing battle will stop sooner rather than later, but they are planning relief efforts for four to six months. There is a member state of the UN waging war against a small nation in the most aggressive manner we’ve ever seen in the history of Lebanon. This should be the message,” he said.
