RIYADH: A project to investigate and evaluate degraded sites in the western and southern parts of Saudi Arabia has been initiated by the National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification. As part of a larger national strategy, the project will use cutting-edge technology to create rehabilitation plans that meet international standards, according to a recent Saudi Press Agency report.
In Makkah, Madinah, Baha, Asir, Jazan, and Najran, it focuses on locating places that have degraded and examining both direct and indirect reasons. According to the SPA, customized strategies will be created to track and assess land degradation while taking into account regional circumstances and national priorities. Plans for short-, medium-, and long-term restoration of degraded areas using globally accepted techniques are included in the strategy.
The center will carry out comprehensive evaluations using geographic information systems and remote sensing as part of the implementation to ascertain the extent of degradation. Based on the restoration needs that are prioritized, workable methods and processes will be created to direct rehabilitation efforts.
