JEDDAH: Following the passing of King Harald V, who ruled for more than thirty years, King Salman of Saudi Arabia and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman sent their condolences to King Haakon VIII of Norway and the Norwegian people.
According to SPA, King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed sent separate cables to King Haakon, members of the royal family, and the Norwegian people expressing their profound sympathies and condolences. Additionally, King Salman wished Norway’s new ruler continued health and happiness.
After a 35-year reign, Norway’s oldest and longest-serving monarch, Harald, passed away on Friday at the age of 89. He was instantly succeeded as King Haakon VIII by his 53-year-old son. Following Harald’s passing, Norway announced a time of national mourning, and the parliament announced that Haakon would take the oath of loyalty in the main chamber on September 1.
On Friday, thousands of Norwegians flocked to the Royal Palace in Oslo to honour Harald with flowers, cards, and national flags. Mourners lined the streets as his casket was driven from Oslo University Hospital to the palace. Harald has accompanied Norway through decades of significant social and economic transformation, according to Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store, who called the monarch “a king of his time and for his time.
When Harald took the throne in 1991, many saw him as representing Norway’s contemporary, tolerant, and open identity. He received special recognition for his capacity to bring the nation together in difficult times.
