How Russian Air Strikes Are Targeting the Heart of Ukraine

Ukraine has presented fragments of a missile it says struck a key government building in Kyiv, identifying it as a Russian Iskander cruise missile. Officials now believe the attack on Sunday morning was deliberate. Observers note that Vladimir Putin’s response to Donald Trump’s peace initiatives has coincided with an escalation of Russian strikes.

The attacks extend beyond the capital. In the Donbas region, a Russian glide bomb killed more than 20 civilians on Tuesday in the village of Yarova while they queued for pensions. President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the strike as “savage,” urging allies to increase sanctions on Moscow. His office noted that some US and European weapons components are still reaching Russia, including for the Iskander missile, though Moscow has replaced the remainder with domestic production.

BBC reporters captured the moment Kyiv’s cabinet of ministers was hit, showing a missile descending before a massive explosion. Inside the Soviet-era building, the smell of burning persisted, and the top floors showed severe damage: blown roofs, collapsed walls, and dangling cables. The missile, carrying over 100kg of explosives, did not fully detonate, limiting the destruction to three floors, though the impact remains significant. Zelensky stressed that strong international measures are needed to halt Russia’s continued attacks.
