Saudi Coin Exhibition Begins in Riyadh: A Journey Through History

RIYADH: The Museums Commission on Wednesday inaugurated the exhibition “Minted Narratives: Saudi Arabia’s Legacy in Coins” at the National Museum in Riyadh, attracting a prominent audience of cultural, historical, and economic figures. The exhibition will remain open to visitors until December 16.

Spanning more than 1,300 years of history, the showcase takes visitors on a journey through the evolution of coinage, beginning with the pre-Islamic era and leading up to the modern Saudi riyal. Coins are presented not only as currency but as markers of history, reflecting religion, culture, politics, and the shared experiences of societies throughout time.

Mona Khazindar adviser to the Ministry of Culture at the Museums Commission described the exhibition as a powerful visual and chronological account of the Kingdom’s past and the Islamic world’s heritage through the story of minting. She noted that each coin bears an imprint of civilization, symbolizing unity, authority, and the Kingdom’s path of unification and development.

The exhibition features rare coins from the private collection of Dr. Alain Baron, a leading numismatic expert, along with pieces from the Ministry of Culture’s holdings. Visitors are will also encounter contemporary works by Swiss artist Zimoun, inspired by the visual language of currency.
