Syria’s New UN Envoy Promises to Turn Hope into Action at Security Council

Syria’s new Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ibrahim Olabi, pledged to “turn hope into action” during his first address to the UN Security Council on Thursday, describing it as the start of a historic shift in the country’s diplomacy and national reconciliation.

Olabi, a 34-year-old British-German lawyer and human rights advocate, officially took up his post on Sept. 11. Speaking at the council, he acknowledged growing international calls for justice and reform, promising that Syria would move from promises to concrete action in its efforts to recover after years of conflict and the fall of the previous regime.

“Less than a year ago, a young Syrian woman sat at this very table speaking out against tyranny. Today, I stand before you as a representative of a new Syria — a Syria committed to freedom, dignity, and justice,” he told the chamber.

A significant part of his remarks addressed recent unrest in Suwayda, a southern governorate that has been gripped by mass protests and violent clashes in recent months. Olabi said the government had adopted a detailed roadmap for peace and accountability, developed during high-level talks in Damascus with officials from the US and Jordan.
