US President Donald Trump has once again stirred controversy by publicly pressuring the Justice Department to take action against his political opponents, a move critics say undermines the agency’s independence.
In a Saturday social media post directed at “Pam seemingly referencing Attorney General Pam Bondi, Trump lashed out over the lack of charges against California Senator Adam Schiff and New York Attorney General Letitia James, both Democrats.
Both Schiff and James were recently accused by Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte, a Trump ally, of falsifying documents on mortgage applications. Trump argued that delay in prosecuting them was damaging America’s credibility, writing, “We can’t delay any longer, it’s killing our reputation and credibility.”
A day earlier, Trump dismissed Erik Siebert, the federal prosecutor overseeing the investigation into James. Siebert reportedly concluded there wasn’t enough evidence to indict her for mortgage fraud. The president justified Siebert’s removal by insisting there was “a GREAT CASE,” claiming many legal experts agreed with him.
Trump’s clashes with Schiff and James go back years. Schiff led the prosecution in Trump’s first impeachment trial in 2019, related to allegations he pressured Ukraine to interfere in the U.S. election. The Senate acquitted Trump in that case, and again in 2021 when he was impeached for inciting the January 6 Capitol riot.
