500 Days Without School: How War Is Affecting Children in Sudan

PORT SUDAN: Sudan’s nearly three-year civil war has kept more than 8 million children out of school for nearly 500 days, according to the NGO Save the Children, highlighting one of the world’s longest school closures.

More than 8 million children, nearly half of the 17 million of school age, have gone approximately 484 days without setting foot in a classroom, according to a statement from the children’s rights organization.” Sudan has been devastated by a power struggle between the army and the Rapid Support Forces since April 2023.

In October, the RSF took El-Fasher, North Darfur’s capital and the last of Darfur’s five capitals not under their authority. According to the statement, West Darfur, West Kordofan, and South Darfur have 27 percent, 15 percent, and 13 percent of their schools functional, respectively.

According to the NGO, many instructors in Sudanese schools are leaving their professions due to unpaid salaries. Without immediate investment, we risk sentencing a whole generation to a conflict-filled future,” warned Inger Ashing, CEO of the NGO. The battle, which has claimed tens of thousands of lives, has resulted in the “world’s worst humanitarian crisis,” according to the United Nations.
