According to the Wall Street Journal, Russian President Vladimir Putin has suggested meeting with US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping next month to seek a settlement to the four-year conflict in Ukraine that would benefit Moscow.
The article reported on Sunday, citing a former Russian intelligence official, that Putin made the offer during a phone conversation with Trump on October 9 that also resulted in an agreement for the US to purchase Russian diesel and enable its sale on the international market.
Trump announced on Thursday that Washington was having denuclearisation negotiations with Beijing and Moscow. He stated in an interview with Newsmax that the US was talking to China and Russia on the matter, and the publication stated that Trump had discussed denuclearisation with Xi.
According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, China has significantly increased its nuclear capabilities in recent years, while the United States and Russia have the two largest nuclear arsenals in the world. Whether Putin’s suggested summit was connected to the denuclearisation talks was not stated in the Wall Street Journal article.
