RIYADH: In the first quarter of 2024, 445 channels were shut down. The Global Center removed more than 16 million online pieces of extremist information for Combating Extremist Ideology and messaging app Telegram. Three terrorist organizations—Daesh, Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham, and Al-Qaeda—were linked to the removed channels, according to the center, also known as Etidal. Arabic-language PDFs, audio files, and video were included in the content.
The center, also called Etidal, said that Daesh, Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham, and Al-Qaeda were the three terrorist groups represented on the removed channels. Arabic audio, video, and PDF files were included in the content.
Al-Qaeda lost 1.6 million items and 72 channels, while Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham lost over 3.2 million items and 186 channels. Over 11.6 million Daesh content items were removed, and 187 channels were shuttered.
In February 2022, Etidal and Telegram started working together to track and detect extremist information posted in Arabic. Since then, they have assisted in the detection and removal of over 75 million extremist-related articles and the closure of 13,533 relevant channels. The partnership agreement shields Telegram users from extremist information and damaging ideological influences.
