Emergency responders reported that on Thursday, a school bus in northwest Syria skidded off the road and into a river, resulting in at least six fatalities and over twenty injuries, the majority of which were children.
A local civil defense group known as the White Helmets stated in a statement that the bus carrying several dozen children had crashed into the Orontes River after it had slid off the road close to the city of Darkush, west of Idlib.
It stated that rescue crews were looking for survivors in the river and along the cliff.
The reason behind the bus’s off-road incident was not immediately apparent. Photos from the location showed searchers clambering over boulders atop a steep crag that overlooked the riverbed.
The children had been attending a Qur’an memorization institute, of which there are numerous in northwest Syria, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a war monitor headquartered in the United Kingdom.
It was the most recent tragedy to strike a region already severely impacted by the ongoing civil conflict in Syria and a devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck northern Syria and Turkiye earlier this year.
