Among the scores of Palestinian inmates who were brought back to the besieged region on Monday for medical attention was the director of the largest hospital in Gaza, who had been held captive by Israel for over seven months.
Itamar Ben Gvir, Israel’s Minister of National Security, and a medical source within the Gaza Strip both verified his release on social media.
Mohammed Abu Salmiya, the director of Al-Shifa, was arrested in November.
The hospital where he worked has been reduced to ruins by many assaults since Israel began its attack on Gaza in response to Hamas attacks on southern Israel on October 7.
Just east of Khan Younis, Salmiya and the other released prisoners returned to Gaza from Israel, according to a medical source at the Al-Aqsa hospital in Deir El-Balah.
According to the source, five inmates were admitted to Al-Aqsa Hospital while the remaining detainees were transferred to facilities in Khan Younis.
While in Deir El-Balah, an AFP correspondent witnessed some prisoners’ tearful reunions with their relatives.
According to reports, the Israeli military was “checking” the release of prisoners.
Salmiya’s release “with dozens of other terrorists is security abandonment,” according to a tweet made by National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir on X, a platform that was originally Twitter.
Hospitals in the Gaza Strip are allegedly being exploited by Hamas as a front for military activities and infrastructure, according to Israel.
