Following a competitive bidding process, Saudi Arabia, represented by the Saudi General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT), has been awarded the right to host the United Nations World Data Forum in Riyadh in 2026. According to the Saudi Press Agency, the decision was made by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development’s High-level Group for Partnership, Coordination and Capacity-Building for Statistics (HLG-PCCB).
The worldwide event is anticipated to draw about 22,000 delegates from 193 countries, including data scientists, representatives from UN member states’ statistical offices, and people with an interest in statistics.
The HLG-PCCB group was presented with Saudi Arabia’s bid by GASTAT President Dr. Fahad Aldossari. In addition to highlighting the Kingdom’s track record of hosting major international gatherings and its dedication to offering forum organisers the logistical support they need, his presentation focused on GASTAT’s advances in statistical work. Using the latest technologies and methodologies to enhance global statistical systems and enable sustainable development” was the theme that Saudi Arabia suggested for the forum.
In a press release, Aldossari stated that organising this event highlights Saudi Arabia’s standing as a major player in the world and the dedication of Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman, as well as Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman, to bolstering the statistical field. In order to promote comprehensive and sustainable development in all domains, statistical data is essential.
