BEIRUT: After Israeli bombings this week, a senior Hezbollah source stated on Saturday that communication had been lost with Hashem Safieddine, who is frequently cited as the group’s future leader.
The group declared in a statement in response to the AFP article that there were “no Hezbollah sources, and our viewpoint is issued in official statements.” Whether contact with Safieddine was lost was not confirmed or denied.
The official informed AFP early on Friday that “contact with Sayyed Safieddine has been lost since the violent strikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs.”
A second source close to Hezbollah also verified that Safieddine’s whereabouts were unknown and that communication had been cut off.
According to him, Hezbollah “is attempting to reach the targeted underground headquarters, but Israel keeps striking again to obstruct rescue efforts.”
According to him, Safieddine “was with Hezbollah’s head of intelligence,” Hajj Murtada, at the time of the strikes.
According to a Hezbollah-affiliated source, Israel launched 11 straight strikes against the group’s base in south Beirut early on Friday. This was one of the most potent raids since Israel stepped up its bombardment campaign last week.
