RIYADH: With the release of the official Land Restoration Guide for Non-Agricultural Areas, Saudi Arabia has advanced towards its lofty afforestation objectives. The handbook is an all-inclusive document that will be a reference point for environmental restoration initiatives throughout the Kingdom.
In addition to supporting the objectives of the Saudi Green Initiative—including planting 10 billion trees, the equivalent of restoring 40 million hectares of damaged land—it seeks to guarantee sustainable land management methods.
On Wednesday, the National Centre for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification held a ceremony called “The Road to Restoring 40 Million Hectares” to launch the release. The event, which was organised under the national afforestation program, brought together a variety of professionals to discuss scientific methods to land rehabilitation and best practices.
The director of the centre’s afforestation division, Sameer Maleakah, emphasised the Kingdom’s lofty environmental restoration objectives. Over 313,000 hectares have been rehabilitated so far in different parts of the Kingdom,” Maleakah told Arab News. But planting isn’t the only thing involved. Protecting the degraded areas—those impacted by overgrazing, illicit logging, or desertification brought on by human activity—is the first step towards restoration.
