A Top US General Travels Unexpectedly to the Middle East as the Threat from Iran Grows

As the region prepared for a feared Iranian attack against Israel, the top US general started an unexpected trip to the Middle East on Saturday to talk about measures to prevent any fresh escalation in tensions that could turn into a larger conflict.

The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Air Force General C.Q. Brown, started his journey in Jordan and announced that he will be visiting Egypt and Israel in the near future to hear the viewpoints of military officials.

Brown stated that if a truce between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas is reached, it would “help bring down the temperature.” The visit coincides with the United States’ efforts to finalize the elusive agreement.

Before arriving in Jordan, Brown spoke with Reuters and said, “At the same time, as I talk to my counterparts, what are the things we can do to deter any type of broader escalation and ensure we’re taking all the appropriate steps to (avoid)… a broader conflict.”

The administration of US President Joe Biden has been working to lessen the effects of the ongoing, now in its eleventh month, conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. Large tracts of Gaza have been destroyed by the battle, which has also led to border skirmishes between Israel and the Hezbollah organization in Lebanon, which is supported by Iran, and attacks on Red Sea ships by Yemen’s Houthis.
