As the German Election Approaches, the AfD Advocates For Mass Expulsion of Refugees

BERLIN — Germany’s far right is in a good mood. On Saturday, while holding a convention in the eastern city of Riesa, Saxony, Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) announced plans to close Germany’s borders, resume buying Russian gas, and effectively collapse the EU. According to German media, the party’s agreed-upon manifesto contains proposals to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement, exit the Euro currency, and form a new confederation of states.

Alice Weidel, the AfD’s leader, has even officially adopted the phrase “remigration” – a term popularly believed to refer to the mass “return” or deportation of migrants. Thousands of anti-AfD activists flooded the streets of Riesa on Saturday, attempting to block access to the conference location. When Alice Weidel finally entered the stage, she referred to the activists outside as a “left-wing mob.”

And, in front of a jubilant conference hall of delegates, he spoke of “large-scale repatriations”. “And I have to be honest with you: if it’s going to be called remigration, then that’s what it’s going to be: remigration,” she told me. It’s a stark contrast from a year ago, when she attempted to remove herself from a scandal centred on the highly contentious subject. There were countrywide anti-AfD rallies after it was discovered that prominent party figures had been among those at a conference where “remigration” was purportedly discussed with Martin.
