According to the UN, 3 Million Sudanese Children Suffer From Severe Malnutrition

Sudan’s Port Sudan: The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) estimates that 3.2 million children under five in war-torn Sudan will suffer from acute malnutrition this year. “Of this total, approximately 772,000 children are anticipated to experience severe acute malnutrition,” Eva Hinds, Head of Advocacy and Communication at UNICEF Sudan, told AFP late Thursday. According to a report released last month by the UN-supported Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), famine has already engulfed five regions of Sudan.

Tens of thousands have been killed in the 20-month conflict between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan, which has resulted in the greatest displacement crisis in history, with 12 million people displaced, according to the UN. Hinds told AFP that “the number of severely malnourished children increased from an estimated 730,000 in 2024 to over 770,000 in 2025,” confirming that 3.2 million children are currently predicted to suffer from acute malnutrition.

By May, the IPC predicts that famine will spread to five more areas of Sudan’s western Darfur region, a sizable region that has witnessed some of the worst violence during the conflict. According to the report, starvation is also a threat in 17 other regions of western and central Sudan.
