Both Domestic and Foreign Audiences are Enthralled with Saudi Arabia’s Literary Rebirth

A new wave of writers is enthralling both domestic and foreign readers in Saudi Arabia, sparking a lively literary renaissance.

According to Ibraheem Al-Sinan, chief of editorial at Raff Publishing, “Saudi literature has witnessed significant acceleration over the past decade, particularly during the period when culture and its literary derivatives became one of the key objectives of Vision 2030.”

“Young people have made significant leaps in literary production as a result of this newfound openness to knowledge and literature, spurred by various initiatives, competitions, and activities,” he continued. The youth now learn in a matter of years what used to take decades.

Saudi authors are creating narratives that capture the fast-paced social transformation and diverse cultural fabric of the Kingdom, from the bustling streets of Jeddah to the heart of Riyadh. These authors include Badriya Al-Bishr, Mohammed Hasan Alwan, and Raja Alem. Their writings range from moving memoirs to allegorical fables.

“Cultural Reflections” and “Modern Narratives” are the two primary themes of Saudi Arabia’s literary movement.

The first looks at questions of cultural norms, legacy, and identity.
