Baha's Rich Legacy Includes Saudi Carpentry

The proverb “A trade in hand ensures against poverty” has a long history in the Baha region. It is primarily attributed to senior carpenters who make use of the variety of trees found there, including neem, sweet acacia, juniper, and sidr, according to the Saudi Press Agency.

The area has a long history of handicrafts and industries that are passed down from generation to generation and play a significant role in the region’s cultural identity.

To keep up with the challenges of the modern world, the locals are working to improve and modernize traditional crafts.

Older carpenter Mohammed Al-Zahrani stated: “Carpentry is a hard and exhausting profession because it takes a lot of time and effort.”

The first step is gathering the wood, which is typically from the sweet and sidr acacia trees that are dispersed throughout Al-Baha’s valleys and mountains. Following the peeling of the bark and drying of the wood, the carpenter will cut and engrave in accordance with the specifications of the employer.

Al-Zahrani emphasized that carpentry is his livelihood and that he engraves and decorates the wood with geometric shapes that are either straightforward or distinctive and unusual. He added that he had shared it with his kids and grandkids.
