ABIDJAN: According to EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, the group denounced on Wednesday an attack that was attributed to jihadist rebels and resulted in the deaths of numerous people in Burkina Faso over the weekend.
According to local sources, an armed group of men attacked the village of Barsalogho in north-central Burkina Faso on Saturday, killing and wounding numerous civilians as well as security personnel.
Claiming responsibility was a group associated with Al-Qaeda that goes by the Arabic initials JNIM. This is just one of many rebel groups active in the unstable Sahel nation since 2015.
According to a statement from Borrell, the EU “condemns in the strongest terms the terrorist attack” that occurred in Barsalogho and “left hundreds of victims, mainly civilians.”
The bloc “conveys its condolences to the families of the victims and its wishes for a swift recovery to the wounded and expresses its solidarity with Burkina Faso,” he continued. Millions of people have been displaced and thousands of people have been killed in the neighbouring countries of Mali and Niger as a result of the insurgency led by rebels connected to Daesh and Al-Qaeda.
