Canada and the GCC Talk About Enhancing Relations in Several Important Areas

RIYADH: After high-level discussions between officials, the Gulf Cooperation Council and Canada have reiterated their commitment to advancing global investment and development partnerships. To improve bilateral cooperation, GCC Secretary General Jasem Al-Budaiwi met with Canadian Minister of International Development Ahmed Hussen on January 6. The GCC Secretariat said in a statement that the discussions looked at ways to strengthen ties between the North American nation and the economic bloc in areas including renewable energy and education.

As seen by the resumption of diplomatic relations in May 2023 following a five-year break, Saudi Arabia and other GCC nations are actively strengthening their relationships with Canada. The Jan. 6 talks also covered urgent regional and global challenges, underscoring the value of communication and strategic alliances in promoting security and world peace, the GCC Secretariat statement continued.

“At the end of the meeting, both parties reiterated the importance of working together to strengthen regional and global efforts at sustainable development, which will lead to more stability in the region and beyond,” the statement read. According to the Saudi Press Agency, Canadian Ambassador Jean-Philippe Linteau met with Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Economy and Planning, Faisal Al-Ibrahim, at his department’s headquarters in Riyadh at the end of December.
