The Philippine Coast Guard reported that on Sunday, a Chinese coast guard ship fired a high-powered water cannon and then rammed a stationary Philippine government vessel near Thitu Island in the South China Sea, causing minor damage. Thankfully, none of the Filipino crew aboard the BRP Datu Pagbuaya were injured. The vessel is part of a fisheries support fleet that assists local fishermen.
The incident happened near Sandy Cay, a group of sandbars between Thitu Island and China’s man-made base at Subi Reef. China claimed the Philippine boats had “illegally entered” what it considers its waters and ignored repeated warnings, prompting its coast guard to “take control measures” and drive them away.
China continues to assert ownership over most of the South China Sea, despite a 2016 international tribunal ruling that dismissed its claims a decision backed by the US and its allies. In response to the latest clash, the US condemned China’s aggressive actions and reiterated support for the Philippines. US Ambassador MaryKay Carlson praised the Filipino crew for their courage and skill in handling the dangerous confrontation.
