According to a new analysis of 23 wars throughout the world, more than 100,000 civilians have died in the past 18 months. The survey also says that following international humanitarian law has reached “a critical breaking point.”
The “War Watch” study named the war in Gaza as one of the most worrying parts of a “epidemic” of violence. It also mentioned worrying levels of crimes in Sudan. The Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights is responsible for the study, which runs from July 2024 to the end of 2025.
Stuart Casey-Maslen, the main author, remarked, “Atrocity crimes are happening again because people let them happen before. What we do or don’t do will determine whether international humanitarian law disappears for good. Since Israel attacked the Palestinian enclave in October 2023, local officials in Gaza say that 18,592 children and 12,400 women have died.
The assessment indicated that Gaza’s population had dropped by “about 254,000 people, a 10.6 percent decline compared with pre-conflict estimates.” This made it one of the deadliest conflicts in the world. It said that even though a truce was agreed to late last year, civilians had still been killed.
