Cubans Welcome Russian Oil Supply, But Is It Enough to Solve the Crisis?

MATANZAS, Cuba: After US President Donald Trump lifted his oil blockade, Cubans warily welcomed the impending arrival of a Russian oil shipment on Monday, though others cautioned it would not significantly alleviate an energy crisis.

The first oil cargo to the communist-ruled island since January was scheduled to arrive at the western port of Matanzas by Tuesday on the tanker Anatoly Kolodkin, which is subject to US sanctions and is carrying 730,000 barrels of crude.

Trump’s choice to allow Russia to deliver the oil prevents a conflict with Moscow and offers short-term respite to a nation that has suffered from fuel rationing, blackouts, and shrinking public transportation. Rosa Perez, a 74-year-old retiree, remarked, “You have no idea how badly we need that oil,” while strolling close to the Matanzas port because her home had lost power once more.
