NICOSIA: As part of a voluntary repatriation program, Cyprus will provide funds to assist Syrian families in returning to their country and permit the primary wage earners to stay on the island nation for a maximum of three years to work, a Cypriot minister announced Thursday. Families must abandon their asylum applications or revoke whatever international protection status they may have had by December 31, 2024, in order to be eligible for the program, according to Deputy Minister for Migration Nicholas Ioannides.
Families that want to voluntarily return would get a one-time payment of 2,000 euros ($2,255) for one adult and 1,000 euros ($1,128) for each kid, according to Ioannides, who unveiled the initiative. Couples without children may also apply. The time frame for applications is June 2–August 31. Additionally, the father or mother, who provides the majority of the family’s income, will be given a special residency and work visa that will allow them to remain in Cyprus for at least two years with the possibility of an additional year.
Many Syrians have stated their desire to return and contribute in the reconstruction of their nation, but Ioannides said many are hesitant to do so due to the lack of confidence about where they would be able to find employment that pays a livable salary.
